Chapped lips

Taking care of oral hygiene is a key measure to prevent chapped and damaged lips, as it prevents fungal or staph infections that are often responsible. The daily care of the lips with emollient lipsticks containing vitamin E contributes to the maintenance of the surface protective layer of fat and traps large amounts of water inside the lips, achieving significant hydration. However, perfumed and castor oil-based lipsticks, which are usually irritating, should be avoided. Before any prolonged exposure to the sun, whether for business or pleasure, lip sunscreens should be used. Emphasis on a proper and balanced diet with the consumption of large amounts of water daily and foods rich in iron, vitamins of the B complex and vitamin E protect the good health of the lips.

In cases of cheilitis due to drug use, it is often necessary to stop the responsible drug and use topical corticosteroids. In cases of cheilitis that persists despite lip care, medical help should be sought as a systemic condition may be underlying, such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis), sarcoidosis or systemic lupus.
