Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a hormone that is produced by the pineal gland (conarium), located at the base of the brain. It is secreted mostly during night time. The production of this hormone is highest during the early stages of growth and slows down after the age of 20; it starts to decrease after the age of 45 and is almost completely phased out in seniors. The secretion is followed by a circadian rhythm: it starts in the afternoon, peaks during night time, falls to a minimum by morning and stays at low levels during the entire day. In the absence of light, when the nerve cells in the retina are not excited, the hypothalamus stimulates the pineal gland to start producing melatonin.

Exogenous administration of melatonin helps to avoid the physical and mental deterioration that occurs with aging. It can be used to ensure proper rest at night and appears to provide protection against anxiety and depression.

Melatonin protects the pineal gland from aging, as it has a strong anti-aging effect on the gland itself. In cases where melatonin is introduced (by oral intake), the pineal gland matures more slowly, decelerating the entire aging process, the deterioration of the tissues and the typical physical and mental deterioration of old age.

Melatonin reduces free radicals better than any other antioxidants. It has twice the antioxidant strength of vitamin Ε and even five times that of glutathione.

As melatonin is soluble both in fats and in water, it can fight free radicals in any environment. When melatonin levels in the body are low, it can be replenished by external intake.
